Birds

Anna's Hummingbird -these little jewels are quite demanding and have no fear.
Help me out..

Northern Flicker

- I haven't noticed these before, are visiting in small flocks.

Purple Finch

-very shy and on alert at all times.

Dark-eyed Junco

-stop by in groups for a quick snack and scatter away just as quickly.

Spotted Towhee

- new acquaintances.

White-breasted Nuthatch

-entertaining busy little clowns.

American Gold Finch (male)

-definite hierarchy in the ranks. Real beauties.

Acorn Woodpecker

- despised destroyers of property.

My new little hobby. I've enjoyed my bird books for years but made no real effort to identify the visitors that I was unfamiliar with. Tristan's wild flower identification project last year motivated my wild bird identification hobby. Having a camera that can take a picture clear across the yard sure helps. Having dogs and cats that want in on everything I do outdoors doesn't help so much. I shoot 20+ crummy pictures for one or two clear ones and then start searching through the books. All of these photos were taken from in the house, and all taken late winter-early spring 2011. I hope that with more practice I'll improve the quality. Feel free to correct any mis-identifications.

Have you started any new hobbies that you are enjoying? Please share.

Those are some pretty darn good photos! I was going to guess the "Unknown" bird as a female cardinal. They look like that around here this time of year, but I don't know for sure.

You sure do get a variety of birds! I love love love the finches...both the red ones and the yellow ones and they are a lot of fun to watch. I get woodpeckers come to the suet bar from time to time, they are BIG!

No new hobbies for me lately...I'm having a heck of a time keeping up with the ones I have!

hi, thanks enjoyed the new pictures. do you have the camera on a tripod when you're shooting from a distance or are you very steady naturally?!?!
as for new hobbies..no new ones, but recently have enjoyed my reading hobby a lot more, here's a book you might enjoy "Outlander" Diana Gabaldon. This is #1 of a series.

Thank you ladies! These have been taken through windows, no tripod since I am constantly following the birds as they flit about, I do rest my elbows against the window. I'll read that book Di. I have enjoyed quite a wide variety of reading lately. Jenn, I was wondering if a cardinal but since I have seen NO males, I am not sure either.

Some terrific shots, Kathy. My brother is a real birder but I can't tell tweety bird from a chicken.

Nice pictures. I thought of Cardinal too, but looking at picture of one, the females have red becks too and the backs of their heads come to a point too. I don't a picture of the one you took in my book, so can't tell you what it is. No new hobbies. Keep the pictures coming. THANKS.

Well, they all just look like birds to me. If you can identify the black beast with the orange beak that has the worst voice in the universe I'd like to know it's name. I don't know why, I just would like to know. Then, when I finally get totally annoyed I'd know who to blame
